After nine months in a warm and safe place your newborn comes out in a world so bright and cold with and audience of professionals and happy people. As a mother you think it's amazing s/he is finally out but is your newborn ready to face the outside world?
Breathing
The first big change for your newborn will probably be breathing. The lungs, mouth and nose of your baby in your womb are full of liquid. Most of the liquid is pushed out when s/he squishes through the birth canal. When you have a c-section babies sometimes need a bit of help to get the liquid out if the liquid doesn't come out by itself.
Body temperature
Your body temperature is around 37c and most birthing suits are not that warm which means your newborn will be in a bit of a shock coming out of the warm womb. The baby will also be wet when coming out therefore drying the baby will be a priority to help your newborn regulate their body temperature. This is why it is important to get babies clothes and beanie on as soon as possible.
Hearing
In the last few months in the womb your baby can already hear. S/he hears the sound of your voice, heartbeat and your breathing. S/he will also hear the sounds outside your body but not as well of course. As soon as baby comes out the noises will be much louder. In the beginning your newborn won't like sudden and loud noises but after 4 weeks s/he can focus more on sound.
Eye sight
Your newborn can't clearly see at birth s/he can see things vaguely up to 25 centimetres in the first few weeks and they can't disengage colors yet. Newborns do start to see contrast after a couple of weeks but still can't distinguish faces. It is not until 6 or 7 months when your baby recognises faces up to an arms length (babies arm) away from him or her.
Taste
At birth your baby has thousands of taste buds, much more than you as an adult. Those taste buds don't stay though, by the age of ten they are almost halved. Your newborn also tastes different. Instead of just using taste buds they are using all five senses this is called 'synesthete' it is when all senses are working together, something that we as adults doe not know.
