The meaning of International Womens Day is 'a day to celebrate how far we have come towards gender equality and how far we have left to go' according to iwda.org.au. For me the last bit is just as important as the first. Indeed we have come so far in the last 110 years but we still are not always seen as equal.
The documentary 'Birth Time' was for me another eye-opening moment of how incredibly strong women are. We are so strong that we do not let anyone know how strong we are. We as women don't brag about it, we don't tell on social media how strong we are and for a very long time we were not able to show men how strong we are sportwise. I am blessed to be part of this century where I can see the change happening. I can see women beat men, I see women standing up against men and women and I can see so many female leaders thrive.
If you see equality as a race between men and women, everyone knows that men had a head start. For centuries men could show us how great they are, how strong they are and how we could count on them. But women have started that exact same race. Women have started the same race but they had to start where men started many many centuries ago. Do you notice that the women are catching up in that race? We are getting closer and closer and we actually sprinted in about 110 years what it took men centuries. I am wondering what happens when we start to get ahead of men in the race. What if we overtake them? Will we let men fall behind or will we make sure they can catch up with us. Will we make sure they can walk side by side to us or will we even support them to keep up with us?
Such interesting times we have ahead and we as women, as mothers, as grandmothers, as aunties and as friends have the task to educate, support and empower women all around us.
